Pressure Washing Westwood

Pressure washing in Westwood is the process of using high-velocity water jets to remove dirt, mold, algae, and buildup from exterior surfaces-decks, siding, driveways, and patios. This case study follows a residential property in Westwood where accumulated grime and weather damage had degraded the home's curb appeal, and how GlassWing Window Cleaning addressed the underlying maintenance gap.

The Problem: A Westwood Home Showing Its Age

The homeowner, a professional couple in their mid-50s living in Westwood, had owned their property for eight years. Over that time, the wooden deck had developed a dark, slippery patina from algae and mold growth. The composite siding showed streaking and discoloration where rain runoff and airborne debris had settled. The driveway concrete bore black staining from tire marks and organic growth. The home sat on a tree-lined street typical of Westwood-mature landscaping provided privacy and character, but it also meant constant exposure to shade, moisture retention, and falling debris.

The couple had considered replacing the deck and repainting the siding, estimating costs in the $15,000 to $25,000 range. Before committing to those investments, they decided to explore whether cleaning alone might restore the surfaces to acceptable condition. They contacted GlassWing Window Cleaning to discuss what pressure washing could realistically achieve.

The Approach: Targeted Cleaning With Respect for Materials

GlassWing Window Cleaning assessed the property and identified three distinct challenges requiring different pressure levels and techniques. The wooden deck required low-pressure washing-typically 1,500 to 2,000 PSI-to remove algae and mold without splintering the wood or opening the grain. The composite siding needed moderate pressure of around 2,500 PSI paired with biodegradable cleaning solution to dissolve streaking without damaging the material. The concrete driveway could tolerate 3,000 to 3,500 PSI to break up stubborn staining.

GlassWing Window Cleaning prioritized three operational principles during the work:

  • Use of eco-friendly, biodegradable cleaners that would not harm landscaping or runoff into Westwood's local water systems
  • Water-conservation techniques including capture and recirculation where feasible, reducing overall water consumption
  • Pre-treatment of sensitive areas and protection of plants, windows, and exterior fixtures before pressure washing began

The team started with the deck, applying a biodegradable algaecide and allowing it to dwell for 20 minutes before low-pressure rinsing. This approach dissolved surface growth without aggressive force that could damage the wood fibers. On the siding, they used a combination of pre-spray application and moderate-pressure rinsing, moving methodically section by section to ensure even results. The concrete received a pre-treatment to break down the organic and tire-mark staining before high-pressure rinsing removed debris.

The entire project, from initial assessment to final cleanup, was completed in a single day. GlassWing Window Cleaning's owner, Jennifer Haynes, personally supervised the work to ensure consistency with the company's standard for quality and customer care.

The Results: Deferred Replacement and Restored Appearance

After pressure washing was complete, the deck returned to its original light gray appearance. The wood grain was visible again, and the surface was no longer slippery. The composite siding showed uniform color, with all streaking removed and the material's integrity unchanged. The driveway concrete transformed from dark staining to light gray, making the property entrance appear cleaner and better maintained.

Measurable outcomes included:

  • Deck surface restored without refinishing or sealing-extending the life of existing decking by 2-3 years through deferred replacement
  • Siding cleaning cost approximately $400, compared to $8,000-$12,000 for repainting
  • Driveway restored for $250, a fraction of the cost of concrete resurfacing or replacement
  • Total project cost was under $1,000, avoiding the $15,000-$25,000 replacement estimate initially considered

The homeowners reported that the property looked noticeably better from the street, and they felt the investment had bought them time to plan future updates on their own timeline rather than in reaction to deterioration. The deck, now clean and safe, became usable again for outdoor entertaining.

Why This Matters for Westwood Homeowners

This case illustrates a practical reality: not all exterior maintenance requires replacement. Westwood properties, like those throughout the Ottawa region, accumulate weathering and organic growth from exposure to humidity, shade, and seasonal temperature swings. Pressure washing removes these surface conditions cost-effectively before they require more invasive repairs.

For homeowners considering deck replacement, siding repainting, or driveway resurfacing, a professional pressure washing assessment from GlassWing Window Cleaning can reveal whether the underlying material is still sound. In many cases, cleaning restores appearance and extends asset life by years at a fraction of replacement cost.

The approach also reflects a broader principle of responsible property stewardship. Using biodegradable cleaners and water-conservation techniques ensures that exterior maintenance in Westwood does not compromise local water quality or waste resources. This aligns with the priorities of homeowners who care about their community and their environmental footprint.

If your Westwood home's exterior surfaces are showing age, discoloration, or buildup, GlassWing Window Cleaning offers a straightforward first step: a site assessment to evaluate what pressure washing can accomplish. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does pressure washing typically cost in Westwood?

Cost varies based on property size, surface material, and degree of buildup, but residential pressure washing projects generally range from $300 to $1,500. A deck cleaning might run $300-$600, siding $400-$800, and driveway $250-$500. GlassWing Window Cleaning provides site assessments to give you an accurate estimate based on your specific property and needs.

Can pressure washing damage my deck or siding?

Improper pressure washing can damage wood, composite materials, and certain sidings if the pressure is too high or the technique is wrong. GlassWing Window Cleaning uses pressure-appropriate methods-lower PSI for wood decks, moderate pressure for composite siding, and high pressure only for concrete. Assessment before work ensures the right approach for your materials.

Is professional pressure washing in Westwood worth the cost, or should I rent equipment and DIY?

Professional cleaning is typically worth the investment because it reduces risk of material damage, saves your time and physical effort, and uses water efficiently with proper runoff management. Equipment rental, pressure mistakes, and potential property damage often exceed the cost of hiring an experienced service like GlassWing Window Cleaning.

SERVICES

ECO-FRIENDLY

We’re doing everything we can to be positive contributors to our beautiful city and the environment.

Biodegradable Cleaners

We use an orange-peel based pressure wash cleaning fluid that we use to clean your siding or walls with first before breaking out the pressure washer. The orange peel cleaner is biodegradable and 100% eco-friendly (and does an amazing job breaking down dirt).

Low Water Usage

We have adopted the process of cleaning exterior walls with our orange-peel soap and a mop before power washing. This creates a much cleaner surface than pressure washing alone, it allows us to not have to use the full power of a pressure washer (which can damage your siding), and we use much less water, which is great for the environment and the city’s water usage. All our soaps and cleaning materials we use for windows are biodegradable and include zero phosphates.

Soy Based Inks

All of our printed materials, business cards, brochures, receipts, etc are printed on recycled papers using soy based inks (no oil based inks).

Sensible Vehicle

We need a truck to transport our equipment from job to job, but that doesn’t mean we need to drive a huge gas-guzzling monster truck. Our vehicles are compact pick-ups. They’re great on gas.

Wind Powered Website

This website is hosted by the North American internet hosting company that has won more Green Energy Awards than any other hosting company in the last decade. They own a wind farm in California, and power their entire business, and this website, on wind power.
