Pressure Washing Ottawa
Pressure washing in Ottawa is the process of using high-velocity water spray to remove dirt, algae, mold, and debris from exterior surfaces like decks, siding, and driveways. GlassWing Window Cleaning provides this service throughout Ottawa and the surrounding region, helping homeowners and businesses restore their property's appearance and protect their investment.
Whether you own a home in Kanata, manage a commercial building downtown, or live in Barrhaven, understanding the fundamentals of pressure washing helps you make informed decisions about your property's maintenance. Here are five things every Ottawa property owner should know.
1. Pressure Washing Removes More Than Surface Dirt
Many people assume pressure washing is simply a more aggressive way to clean. In reality, it targets biological growth that regular cleaning cannot reach. Algae, mold, and mildew don't just sit on the surface of your deck or siding-they colonize into the material itself, breaking it down over time. Pressure washing physically removes this growth at the root.
This is especially important in Ottawa's climate, where spring moisture and fall dampness create ideal conditions for mold and algae to thrive. By removing these organisms, you extend the lifespan of your wooden decks, vinyl siding, and concrete surfaces. GlassWing Window Cleaning uses eco-friendly techniques that clean effectively without harming the plants, soil, or waterways around your home.
2. Water Pressure Settings Matter-and Higher Is Not Always Better
Pressure washing equipment ranges from 1,000 PSI (pounds per square inch) to 4,000 PSI or more. The right pressure for your Ottawa home depends entirely on what material you're cleaning. Using excessive pressure on delicate surfaces can cause real damage.
| Surface Type | Recommended Pressure | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden decks | 1,000-1,500 PSI | High pressure splinters and erodes wood grain |
| Vinyl siding | 1,300-1,600 PSI | Excessive force drives water behind panels |
| Concrete driveways | 3,000-4,000 PSI | Concrete is durable and benefits from deep cleaning |
| Roof shingles | 500-1,000 PSI | Shingles are fragile and easily damaged |
A professional service knows which pressure setting suits each surface on your Ottawa property. GlassWing Window Cleaning assesses your deck, siding, and other areas individually, adjusting technique to deliver results without causing harm.
3. Timing and Seasonal Conditions Affect Results and Safety
Ottawa's seasons dictate when pressure washing delivers the best results. Spring and early summer are ideal because algae and mold are actively growing, making them easier to remove, and the weather allows surfaces to dry thoroughly afterward. Pressure washing in late fall can be less effective because biological growth is dormant and harder to dislodge.
Temperature also matters. Freezing conditions create hazards-wet surfaces turn icy, and equipment can freeze. Wind affects spray accuracy and can blow water where you don't want it. A professional team knows Ottawa's weather patterns and schedules work when conditions are safest and most effective, protecting your property and ensuring the cleaning lasts longer.
4. Eco-Friendly Practices Protect Ottawa's Environment and Your Landscaping
Every gallon of runoff from pressure washing carries chemicals and debris into Ottawa's soil and storm drains. Many standard pressure washing cleaners contain harsh surfactants that persist in the environment long after the job is done. Biodegradable alternatives break down naturally without accumulating toxins.
Water conservation also matters in a region where groundwater supports local ecosystems. Some pressure washing services use excessive water to compensate for lower pressure or poor technique. GlassWing Window Cleaning prioritizes water-conservation methods and biodegradable cleaners, meaning your deck or driveway gets cleaned thoroughly without harming the gardens, lawns, and natural areas around your Nepean, Gloucester, or Ottawa home.
5. Professional Service Saves Time, Money, and Prevents Costly Mistakes
DIY pressure washing looks straightforward until something goes wrong. Incorrectly set pressure can splinter a $5,000 deck, force water behind vinyl siding and cause rot, or damage shingles and void your roof warranty. Equipment rental, cleanup, and the physical labor involved often cost more than hiring professionals by the time you account for your time and potential repairs.
Professional service means no guesswork. The team arrives with properly maintained equipment, knows exactly how to handle your specific materials, carries liability insurance, and stands behind their work. For homeowners and businesses across Ottawa looking to restore their property's appearance safely and reliably, professional pressure washing removes the risk and guarantees results.
If your Ottawa home or business needs professional pressure washing-whether it's your deck, exterior siding, gutter cleaning, or preparation for a real estate showing-GlassWing Window Cleaning is here to help. Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I pressure wash my home or deck in Ottawa?
Most Ottawa homeowners benefit from pressure washing their deck or siding every 2-3 years, depending on exposure to shade, moisture, and algae growth. Properties in shadier areas or near trees may need cleaning more frequently. Concrete driveways in Ottawa typically require pressure washing every 1-2 years due to salt use in winter and algae growth in damp seasons.
Is pressure washing safe for vinyl siding?
Yes, pressure washing is safe for vinyl siding when done correctly. The key is using the appropriate pressure setting-typically 1,300-1,600 PSI-and maintaining proper spray angle and distance. Excessive pressure can force water behind panels and cause damage. Professional services know how to clean vinyl effectively without risk.
What is the difference between pressure washing and soft washing?
Pressure washing uses high-velocity water to blast away dirt and biological growth from durable surfaces like concrete and wood decks. Soft washing uses lower pressure combined with eco-friendly cleaning solutions, making it ideal for delicate surfaces like roof shingles, vinyl siding, and exterior paint. Many Ottawa properties benefit from both methods depending on the surface.
Can pressure washing help prepare my Ottawa property for a real estate showing?
Absolutely. A clean exterior significantly impacts first impressions and property value perception. Pressure washing decks, driveways, siding, and gutters removes years of accumulated dirt and algae, making your Ottawa home look well-maintained and attractive to potential buyers. Many real estate agents recommend professional exterior cleaning as part of open house preparation.

SERVICES
ECO-FRIENDLY
We’re doing everything we can to be positive contributors to our beautiful city and the environment.
Biodegradable Cleaners
We use an orange-peel based pressure wash cleaning fluid that we use to clean your siding or walls with first before breaking out the pressure washer. The orange peel cleaner is biodegradable and 100% eco-friendly (and does an amazing job breaking down dirt).
Low Water Usage
We have adopted the process of cleaning exterior walls with our orange-peel soap and a mop before power washing. This creates a much cleaner surface than pressure washing alone, it allows us to not have to use the full power of a pressure washer (which can damage your siding), and we use much less water, which is great for the environment and the city’s water usage. All our soaps and cleaning materials we use for windows are biodegradable and include zero phosphates.
Soy Based Inks
All of our printed materials, business cards, brochures, receipts, etc are printed on recycled papers using soy based inks (no oil based inks).
Sensible Vehicle
We need a truck to transport our equipment from job to job, but that doesn’t mean we need to drive a huge gas-guzzling monster truck. Our vehicles are compact pick-ups. They’re great on gas.
